Probation Fellowship Program
The Toledo Municipal Court Probation Officer Fellowship Program is designed for recent graduates with degrees in criminal justice, social work, psychology, or other related fields who are interested in learning and mastering the job of a probation officer. The program provides in-depth training that focuses on the Probation Department’s core standards, supervision techniques, community resources, and best practices in establishing working relationships with probation clients. The fellowship program is one-year with the possibility of a second year for select candidates.
A probation officer’s role is to guide and motivate probation clients. Probation work includes formulating rehabilitation plans and recommendations and keeping clients motivated to comply with court orders. Probation officers must have strong interviewing skills, organizational proficiency, initiative, be able to work with the public in a professional manner, and skill in verbal and written communication.
Fellowship Program Eligibility
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, social work, psychology or related field
Graduated from a degree program within one year of application
Cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA at the time of graduation
Must be LEADS certifiable (may not have prior convictions such as fraud, theft, or crimes involving violence or weapons)
Preferred but Not Required
One-year experience working with the public
Internship(s) and/or work experience in a court or treatment setting
Application Process
Individuals must submit:
Letter expressing interest in the program
Completed fellowship application
Letter of support completed by an individual with a professional relationship with the applicant
Transcript from highest/most recent degree
